Games Played

Troyes

I played Troyes on Thursday game night with Adam, Tina, and Brian.  It had been a long time since I’d last played it, and I had forgotten a lot of the mechanics.  They also added in the expansion.  I got a ton of money early, so didn’t worry about it for a while.  At the end of the game I had to consider money again, but it didn’t really come up as a major issue.  I didn’t get any specialized point cards, so I didn’t score very well.  Despite that I got a close third.   Adam won with his use of the expansion.

Brunch, MTG, and Shabuway

Steph had a seminar this past weekend so I had some time for a guys day.  I biked over to Andrew’s place, and took a wrong turn onto Lawrence, making me about 30 minutes late.  I was still there before many of the others.  Brunch was fantastic, with some tasty pancakes from Lindsay, some eggs surrounded by sausage from Adam, and an assortment of other tasty treats from Andrew and Debby.  I brought some nice croissants, and made some of the cheese filled crescent rolls that Steph likes.

After brunch some of Andrew’s workmates joined for a draft, and it was nice to do a 6 person draft instead of the 4 person ones we normally do.  I lost some and won some.  I had a really fun deck, that only needed a few more act of treasons to round it out.  In the entire card pool there was only one copy, despite it being common, and I still got that one.  I had a red/black steal and sack deck.  There was one guy who somehow drafted a mill deck, and he ended up beating a lot of us pretty soundly.

After the MTG we went to Shabuway for dinner where Steph joined us.  I had so many enoki mushrooms and it was gloriously delicious.

Games Night

We had a lot of Facebookers come over to Games Night at Beachhead.  They were mostly light gamers.  Adam and I had one join us playing Caverna.  It was a fun game, and I was doing great at farming.  I neglected the caves and rooms to my detriment.  I got a distant second.  I biked there and back and it was a really nice bike ride.

Taboo

We had Lindsay, Kevin, Riley, and Rong over for Taboo on Wednesday.  It was a really great time!  Stephanie and I won the couples round, despite her checking her email during a turn where I was giving the clues instead of trying to guess.  The guys won the girls vs. guys round.  We then did a round of telephone pictionary to cap it off, and that was a ton of fun.  We had some good win, some tasty cookies, and I cooked a good bit of misir wot.

MTG and Cookout at Andrew’s

We went to the lost colony (Andrew’s place) and played some MTG on Saturday.  Lindsay was kind enough to give me a ride, and we had a great time.  In the draft I got lucky with my color choices and nearly got two colors to myself.  I did some silly things in the draft, but it was pretty good despite not being on my A game.  I ended up losing to Andrew and Kevin, but not by all that much.  I was able to get some good combos going, but I couldn’t get a good finisher.  The best cards I had would get out, and then there would be a good counter from the other side.

After MTG we started cooking for the bbq, and I cleared up the MTG.  It was really good food, and some types of food that I hadn’t had before, like a grilled tofu in a tahini based sauce.  It was all really tasty, especially the burger.  I decided to head back with Steph instead of staying to play poker.  She’d been having a rough couple days, so I thought some time with her would be good.

Long Games Day

We had a nice long games day at Beachhead with Adam, Tina, Erik, Jeff, and myself.  We started off with some general laziness as we felt more like hanging out with each other and not thinking too hard than playing games.  We then somehow decided on Tzolk’in as the first game, but Jeff decided to just hang out with us and not play.  I did decently well, but Adam won the day with a huge come from behind victory.  I was playing as the character that could get any level 4 tech when teching up, and I had used it pretty substantially.

The next game we played was Galaxy Trucker.  I got a handicap after winning the first round, so I was at a bit of a disadvantage, especially since the handicap was meteoric inversion.  A few times while playing we got the space billiards card, which, when combined with the inversion made me a fantastic target, especially since I was winning.  The game went on like that and I managed to keep mostly intact.  The first round I took the rift ship, the second round was the toroid, and the third round Tina and I took the missing plans ship.  That final round was especially interesting since the missing plans ship ended up being three ships, a large one on the right and two small ones on the left.  We both somehow managed to make it back to port with all three ships, despite both me taking out the front half of Tina’s large ship and the constant barrage of inverted meteors taking out the back section of my ships so that I didn’t have any engines at the end.

After sitting around for a while we decided to watch some Archer, try for watching a downloaded version of the Avengers, but it was too low quality, and then ended up watching Ex Machina.  The movie was interesting, but not really my kind of movie.

Dinner and Poker at Andrew’s

We went to Andrew’s place and had a pretty nice cookout.  Debby had made some tofu skewers.  We also had some tasty tasty burgers.  Steph left after dinner, then Debby, Andrew, Lindsay, Kevin, Adam, and I played some poker.  We started with a tournament, that I stayed in about half of the time.  It was a $20 buy in, and Andrew ended up winning, unsurprisingly.  We then did a cash game where I bought in for $40, the topped up with $20 when I had lost some more.  I then got some really lucky breaks against Kevin with A’s over his Q’s pre-flop, as well as hitting the straight on the river.  I really enjoyed it, and that is the second game in a row where I ended up.

Andrew’s Place

We played a good round of Poker at Andrew’s on Saturday night with Lindsay, Adam, Kevin, and Debby.  Steph joined us for dinner, but didn’t want to hang around after that.  The food was decent, but not great.  The ma po tofu was the most disappointing part of the dinner.  We had a great time, and I won a lot.  I was making some really bold moves, and got some amazing hands.  Adam was nice enough to take me home.

The next day I joined Andrew and Adam for brunch.  It was pretty tasty and very filling.  We then went back to Andrew’s place and met up with Lindsay and Kevin there.  We played a bit of magic (dragons), where I did ok, but not great.  I had a few amazing plays, but not enough that I could win. Kevin had a really fast deck, and he ended up winning the day.  We decided to do dinner at Tasty Indian Pizza, and it was pretty tasty.  We were hoping for something like tikka masala sauce on pizza, but it was a bit less Indian than that.  We then went over to a place nearby for watching Game of Thrones, and boy was it a good episode.

Games Night

We went to BHH last night and it was strange since none of the occupants of the house were playing games with us.  We had a few drinks and I played a fun game with Adam and Brian called Imperial Settlers.  It is a dumbed down version of New Era which is good in many ways and not as good in many ways.  I liked the theming and removal of many of the restrictions.  I also didn’t feel like I was desperate for resources the whole time.  I had control of the board for most of the game, but Adam had some really good early scoring cards that got him the game.  I was able to destroy two of them but not in time.
