Movie Night: Double Indemnity

Steph and I joined Lindsay, Andrew, Kevin, and Debby at Lost Colony for a movie night.  They had leftover snacks from poker on Friday, and some ice cream.  The stars of the night, however, were the new kittens.  Ajani(AJ) and Kiora(Kiki) were adorable.  I played with them a good bit, and they used my legs as a playground.  The only not so great part is when they ran across my face, but it didn’t hurt that much.

The movie was good.  As with many of the older movies, it is interesting to see what modern movies take from it.  Watching it now without taking into account that this movie predates most others we’ve seen would make it feel like the movie is overusing tropes.  The difference comes when you realize those tropes started with these older movies.

Secondhand Lions

We had Lindsay, Kevin, Andrew, and Debby over for a viewing of my favorite movie, Secondhand Lions.  They were asking all the right questions during the movie, which made me at least know that they were engaged with it.  I also think they liked it.

Before the movie they brought over some pie, and it was very tasty.  During the movie Archer came over to me to cuddle for about 20 minutes.  Lindsay got jealous of the kitty cuddles.  Also during the movie Steph send me a hangout message.  Since I was streaming from my phone it showed up huge on the screen, very funny for us, and thankfully not compromising.

Saturday Hike

We went hiking with Steph’s coworkers and SO’s (Kaijen, Michael, Pete, and Julie).  We went up to Windy Hill, and thankfully this time there wasn’t rain.  We also started at the bottom, which was easier to get to as we didn’t have to drive on Old La Honda.  I hate that road, and usually drive further to get to La Honda so I don’t have to deal with the one lane, blind corners, and bikers everywhere.  The temperature was perfect, and there was lots of sun, which we were prepared for.  As per usual I was faster going uphill than most of the others, but much slower going downhill.  The knee brace I’ve been using helps a ton, but I’m still careful when going down.

After the hike we went to Rong’s place to watch Akira and My Neighbor Totoro with her and Riley.

Deadpool

I really enjoyed the movie.  It was a stupid movie, with tons of cliches, and a very predictable plot.  It also made fun of itself the entire time.  I highly recommend seeing it in a theater.

Inside Out

We had a great time going to see Inside Out with a bunch of other people at Shoreline theater.  We had Adam, Jeremy, Kevin, Lindsay, Andrew, Debby, Riley, Rong, and Brian there with us.  Stephanie set up the day, and we got great seats.  I really like that the seats can be reserved now, and they are plush couches that recline.  The movie was fantastic, especially that most of the movie was for adults, and the subtle scientific theories thrown in.  This is a movie that will hold up with time.  The during credits views in other’s heads was also amazing.  The short beforehand wasn’t very good though.

Long Games Day

We had a nice long games day at Beachhead with Adam, Tina, Erik, Jeff, and myself.  We started off with some general laziness as we felt more like hanging out with each other and not thinking too hard than playing games.  We then somehow decided on Tzolk’in as the first game, but Jeff decided to just hang out with us and not play.  I did decently well, but Adam won the day with a huge come from behind victory.  I was playing as the character that could get any level 4 tech when teching up, and I had used it pretty substantially.

The next game we played was Galaxy Trucker.  I got a handicap after winning the first round, so I was at a bit of a disadvantage, especially since the handicap was meteoric inversion.  A few times while playing we got the space billiards card, which, when combined with the inversion made me a fantastic target, especially since I was winning.  The game went on like that and I managed to keep mostly intact.  The first round I took the rift ship, the second round was the toroid, and the third round Tina and I took the missing plans ship.  That final round was especially interesting since the missing plans ship ended up being three ships, a large one on the right and two small ones on the left.  We both somehow managed to make it back to port with all three ships, despite both me taking out the front half of Tina’s large ship and the constant barrage of inverted meteors taking out the back section of my ships so that I didn’t have any engines at the end.

After sitting around for a while we decided to watch some Archer, try for watching a downloaded version of the Avengers, but it was too low quality, and then ended up watching Ex Machina.  The movie was interesting, but not really my kind of movie.

The Theory of Everything

We watched the Theory of Everything at Brian and Kate’s place.  I was a little late, but made it in time for the movie.  It was a good movie and a great crowd, but the movie wasn’t my cup of tea, and since we weren’t interacting much while watching the crowd didn’t matter.  I still had a great time.

Dinner and a Movie

Steph and I went to Shiok with Amanath, Rish, Tommy, Sara, and Max.  Max just did dinner, and the rest of us went to see the last Hobbit movie.  It was terrible.  The movie had so many boss fights that it was more or less one boss fight after the other, and each one was absurd in how it played out.  The eagles coming at the end, while actually part of the book, really made it seem that much more absurd.  The one guy I wanted to see fight, beorn, didn’t really get anything more than a quick scene.  We were amused by the mounts that showed up in the last battle; the elk, pig, and rams.  The rams were especially amusing since they came out of nowhere.

Dumplings and Pom Poko

We met people at House of Dumpling in San Mateo for dinner on Saturday.  Then we went over to Lindsay’s place and watched a movie called Pom Poko.  The  premise of the movie was that tanuki (raccoon dogs) had their habitat destroyed and were able to change shape into anything they wanted.  They were able to use their scrotums to make many different objects.  The movie was very depressing. We watched it with Jeremy, Lindsay, Debbie, Kevin, Andrew, Steph, and I.  We had cake for Jeremy’s birthday as well and it was tasty.
