It's an Exciting World

The life and times of David Geisert

Cave Tubing

We got up to go cave tubing the first full day in Belize.  We had heard that the previous week all water activities had been canceled due to high water.  We got lucky and the water was just low enough for us to go through the river of caves.  We had a long and bumpy ride out to the river, which is on the Caves Branch property, and then we got ready to go.  The water was a bit cool, but not too bad.  The diving booties were perfect for the water.

We started on the first cave and I was very surprised at how far it went.  I was also surprised when there was a loud popping sounds at the very beginning as one of the guides had the extra tube pop on a sharp rock.  We were in the first cave for a good 45 minutes.  The light was too low for the GoPro to really pick up the larger sections of the cave, but in the tighter sections, and where there were cave in windows we could get a good video.

There were a good number of bats in the caves, and we could see them flying around when we woke them with the headlamps.  We got through the first two caves, and had the option to stop there for lunch.  We declined and had to hike through the jungle for a little bit to get to the next cave.  Once there the guide told us to keep our lights off and do the cave in the dark, since it was a slow cave that was also deep, so nothing to worry about.

When we exited the dark cave, there was a massive group of people on the side of the river.  This was where the cruises would bring their guests and have them go through the last two caves.  This made it a little harder for us since we had to deal with cruise passenger tube flotillas.  The tubes they were on were connected together making large rafts of 12 to 16 people, and it was impossible to get around them.  At a few points these rafts got between us and we just had to deal with it.  Not too long after that we got to the end of the cave and had lunch.

As amazing as breakfast and dinner were, lunch was simple.  There were tortillas with veggies, cheese, and lunch meats.  The food was filling, healthy, but not all that tasty.  We got to chat with the other guests a good bit and made quick friends.  It seemed like the Caves Branch attracted a certain kind of person, which was the kind of person Steph and I get along with very well.

Getting to Belize

The morning of my flight, my mom was nice enough to get up early, even for her, and drive me to the airport.  I got there a little before Stephanie, but by the time I went through security she was waiting and we had breakfast at the only open restaurant in the food court.  The flight was uneventful, and we made it to Belize.  After clearing customs there was a guy with a sign waiting for us at the airport.  We headed to Caves Branch and got there mid afternoon, at about the same time all the tours were coming in from the jungle.  We hung out in the room until dinner.  The dinner was much nicer than we were expecting and it was a full 3 course dinner.  There was a different 3 course dinner every night.  The first course was pasta, soup, salad, and cheeses.  The second course was the main course of fruits, and entrees.  Many of the entrees were vegetarian and vegan friendly with a side option of meat, cheese, and eggs.  There was also a delicious desert course every night.  The staff there was also amazing, being both friendly and helpful.  Chef Jay was fun, and reminded me strongly of Carlos, a friend from the fraternity, who was a  Chef.  We got to chat with some fun people and then called it a night early.

Lights at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens

We went to the botanical gardens and it was gorgeous.  I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Magic and Lords of Waterdeep

Chris came over to Jeff’s at noon, and we did a 6 sealed pack of Khans.  I had a fun morph deck that would probably have been able to take on either of them, but it wasn’t able to take on both.  Chris and I then played a second game, and his creatures were able to overrun me.  He had something like a mardu deck, but included lots of enchantments that applied to all his creatures.  That plus I didn’t draw mana well on the second game let Chris win.  We decided to then play a game of Lords of Waterdeep.  I didn’t get good enough plot quests to really drive my game forward, Jeff and Chris got quests that allowed stronger gameplay.  I was also doubled up with Piety for jeff, which slowed me down a bit as well.

Meeting Katie’s Family

Katie, Jeff’s girlfriend, invited us to her parents house to watch the rivalry games.  We got to meet her parents and sister.  The games were good to watch, but I called Steph for an hour.  The GT-Georgia game had an amazing and riveting ending with GT winning.  I had a great time, and met Amanda, Katie’s younger sister right before leaving.  I was amused by the mirror of our family.  We are boy, boy, girl and the gaps are 1.5 years and over 2 years.  Their family was girl, girl, boy with gaps of 1.5 years and over 2 years.  It was amusing.

Thanksgiving

We went to my grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving.  We got up early and met at my parents house for breakfast before leaving.  Kim was running late so Mom waited for her.  We got a little far ahead and stopped by Bass Pro Shop on the way.  We were the first ones there, and we helped set up as much as we could.  Nana is always wanting to set things up and clean herself.  Not many people came this year, and it was probably a total of 20 people.  Fred and I got to show pictures to each other.IMG_1790 IMG_1793 IMG_1792 IMG_1787 IMG_1785 IMG_1783 IMG_1778 IMG_1775 IMG_1774 IMG_1773 IMG_1770 IMG_1769

Flying to Atlanta

I got a Supershuttle to SFO and there wasn’t any complication in the flight.  I got to ATL and Jeff picked me up around midnight.  We headed back to his place.  The next day we went to our parents house and had a nice dinner.  It was Jeff’s birthday so we had a nice cake.  I got to meet Jeff’s girlfriend, and she was nice, cute, and smart.  Jeff and she seemed to get along really well.  The dinner was more or less meat.  There was a salad, but the primary food was chicken, pork, and beef.  There was also Red Lobster dinner rolls, that were delicious.  We also hiked up Stone Mountain, and it was cold at the top with a strong wind.  The view was fantastic.  We went shooting on Friday and I fired 2 dozen rounds.  We did 2 rounds of 5 shot competitions, with the first standing and the second kneeling.  I was barely better on both, with Jeff close behind.  Dad did the standing with us, and was way off.

Documentary Night – More Than Honey

This was a pretty good documentary, and the turn out was much more than the previous nights.  There were probably 15 people there, so I ended up grabbing some floor space.  We had some pretty good food as well.  Steph and I brought some gnocchi in pesto sauce.  Brian brought some quiche, and there was a tasty tuber mash of some sort.  I had a really good time and enjoyed the documentary.

Lightbringer Series

This was a really great fantasy series, and it was especially great with the different views of the history of the world.  The power struggles are also a pretty amazing part of the plot, especially with the characters who really know what is going on, but not changing everything.  The series is pretty long and the Kip character becomes a little overpowered quickly.  I do like that he starts out as a fat kid who can’t do anything.  The characters are very believable, and the different sides all follow reasonable values and are pretty consistent.  I can’t wait for the 4th book.
