Thai Cooking

Steph and I have started trying to cook Thai food since we got back from Thailand.  I started off with a simple dish – curry.  Normally this wouldn’t be simple, but since I’m using pre-made curry paste, it is very simple.  I added in some tofu, butternut squash, and potato as the primary ingredients.  It was ok, but not something I’d really look forward to eating again.  The curry paste was red curry paste, and wasn’t the best brand.

We then got together and stopped by Ranch 99 to get the authentic foods.  We got the makings for Tom Yom, a hot and sour soup.  We also grabbed some of the better curry pastes.  The Tom Yom first attempt turned out decently well with just Steph and I doing it.  The ingredients were the spices plus some mushroom and tofu.  The second attempt had Nick helping us out.  We bagged the spices in some cheese cloth, which worked great.  Normally one had to avoid eating the spicing materials, but with the cheese cloth bag for the spices, the flavor was great and we didn’t have to avoid the spices.  I also added in potato, butternut squash, and carrot.  The potato did really well, the butternut squash was moderate, and the carrot wasn’t very tasty with the soup.  I think it was too sweet to go with the hot and sour flavor of the rest of the soup.

We got the ingredients for the next attempt of soup, and some curry ingredients as well at the California Avenue Farmers’ Market.  I’m looking forward to trying it out.

Umami

Steph and I went out for lunch today at Umami.  It was tasty as always, and the truffle fries were especially good tasting today for some reason.  We talked about CatDuo stuff while we were there, and I think that a lot of the points Steph made around that are very good ones.  After that I went back to my place and packed up for Thailand.

Dinner at Mardini’s with Michael

This was a really nice place for dinner on Wednesday.  Michael and I had a philosophical conversation while the sun set over Menlo Park.  He is a lot of fun to talk to about philosophical things, as he is very logical and consistent.  The food there was also delicious.

Dinner at Google

I went to Google last night for dinner with Adam.  It was really nice to sit down and talk about his plans with planes and trips.  He is an adventurer and cares much more about life than work.  I admire him in that respect, and hope to learn from him about it.  I also hope to learn from him when he starts to build his plane in February.  I’ll help him out no matter what else I’m doing, but the degree to which I can help is questionable.  After having dinner we went back to my place and played a few rounds of Gauntlet of Fools.  We each won a few and had a good time doing it.  We messed up a little bit of the iconography, but it didn’t matter too much in the end.  With just the two of us it tended to be that the gimped adventurer would be the one to lose, but it was still very enjoyable.

Dim Sum with Nick

We met up with Nick this morning for some Dim Sum at Tai Wu Mr. Fong’s.  He invited some of the games group and people from his work.  A lot of people ended up bailing at the last minute, so it was only 5 of us, but still very enjoyable.  I had way too much to eat, but it was all delicious.  After eating I rode to Brian’s for games with Nick.

Ryan’s Defense

On Wednesday I went to Ryan’s PhD defense and it was very interesting.  He did some experiments on the mid water column in Monterrey Bay and used that plus some other measurements to create a generic, mid-water-column flow model.  It had a lot of points that I didn’t understand that well, but it all seemed very interesting and cool.  I was glad to get to show up an listen.  It was also nice to see Liana again and hear about her decisions.  Michael and I hung around until Ryan got out of the review and congratulated him on the successful defense.  Michael and I stopped by Ikes for dinner and chatted about all sorts of things after that, but mainly Wheel of Time.  I realized that there were a lot of details that I missed, and names I don’t remember.  That is pretty normal for me, and Michael knows a lot of them because of his forums activities on the subject and not necessarily the first read through itself.

Sunday Morning at the Farmer’s Market

I biked over to the farmer’s market on California Ave this Sunday.  HODO Soy wasn’t there again, and their spot was taken by a crepes stand.  It makes me wonder if they will be coming back to the farmer’s market or if they called it quits.  I decided to grab some bolani, got Steph some more of the yogurt she likes, and had a lamb curry wrap for brunch.  The ride was very nice, even though it was a little cool out.

Lunch at Oren’s Hummus

We went to Oren’s for lunch and brought along a bottle of orange sauce.  It was soooo tasty, and I ate way too much.  We might make a habit of taking the orange sauce out to eat since it was so good.

Working with Michael

Yesterday Michael and I worked in the COHO at Stanford, and it was quite enjoyable.  I decided to make a big list of my beliefs, and got through pretty much all of it.  We went by the gym he joined on the way home, and it seems nice.  It has everything one could need for working out, and I should really start joining him there in the mornings. We are working together again today in Meyer library.  I am hoping to get a lot done, but we will see how that goes.
