Walking the Kitties

I walked the kitties by myself today, and it went ok.  The dogs were in the back yards, so when they started barking, Archer and Lana ran off.  They chose to run in opposite directions and made it impossible for me to get them both.  I let Archer run back inside and then guided Lana back in.  It wasn’t ideal, but they did ok.

Children of the Mind

This book was a big complicated mess, but the story was decent.  The way that reality started to fall apart wasn’t all that appealing to me.  I like the philotic connections that they make up, but the way that things crumble when they aren’t being paid attention to was a little much.  I’m interested to read more about the communications with the new race.

Shadow Puppets

This was a great finale to the story of Bean and Achilles.  There were many parts of this that I didn’t expect, and that made it all the more interesting.  I was also surprised by how well planned some of the moves were, making it very neat to see them come through.  I liked this story especially well since the motivations behind all of the characters were very believable and understandable.  The only one I was a little surprised about was Bean and Petra with their embryos, but I think that was a bit of the Mormon influence coming through.

Squash with Nima

I got to play some squash today, but I got beaten pretty badly in 2 out of the 4 games.  The remaining two games I only won one, and barely lost the other.  They were both really good games, when I was warmed up and not yet too tired to keep playing.  Nima was in much better shape than I was and I could really feel it.  We hung out some before the game working a bit on a game in unity.  He was surprised at how quickly things can come together in Unity.  We’ll probably be able to get the game playable with just one more meeting next week.

Mort

This was a really pleasant book, that had a lot of background on the diskworld.  The amusing parts about death and how he didn’t want the job anymore were very nice.  I liked the way he treated the cats in the story.  I look forward to reading more of the diskworld books.

Cancelled Flight

In the morning we went to see Steph’s Cousin and had lunch at a cute place that had good food.  They caught up on all sorts of stuff, and I chimed in a bit.  We then met up with everyone else where we found out that the flight had been delayed 3 hours.  I was ready to get there, but we stopped of for some food first at a cheese steak place.  The cheese steaks were delicious and we then went to wait at the terminal.  The flight continued to get delayed, and a flight to SFO that was originally scheduled after us left.  We shortly thereafter got the news that our flight had been cancelled.  This was very annoying since, had we chosen to drive, we would have just been arriving back in SF.  Amit and Steph were nice enough to drive us back, and I tried to get as much sleep as possible, but the car wasn’t particularly comfortable for it.

To San Diego

Steph, Tina, Ilia, Amit, and I went to San Diego for Jimmy’s wedding.  The alarm I set was also set for weekdays only so it didn’t go off when we needed it to.  We got a call from Tina and had to rush over to get there.  On the drive to the airport it got super foggy and we realized that there would likely be delays anyway so there wasn’t as much of a rush.  Sure enough when we got there they had delayed the flight because “Well, look out the window.”  Tina was amazing and brought some Izzy’s bagels for everyone.  They were as usual very tasty.  I’m been resisting the urge to go over and get a half dozen, since Izzy’s is only a half block from my place.  We got in and went to get the rental car, with Steph doing the 1.5 hour drive to the hotel.  We stopped off for some lunch on the way at a place that did potato and fried chicken burritos.  They were very different from any burritos I’d had before.  I would more call them wraps than burritos since there wasn’t much in the way of rice or beans in the one I had.  It was still very tasty with the potatoes as hash browns.  I grabbed some cards at the cvs, which was good since the rooms at the hotel weren’t ready for us when we got there.  We spent about an hour playing some open faced Chinese poker.  I ended up a good bit, and had some good probabilities of monster hands that didn’t work out in the last couple hands.

Walking the kitties

IMG_0809[1]

Steph and I took Archer and Lana for a walk together today.  They did well until Lana decided she wanted to squeeze through a small gap between the fences.  Eventually she decided to come back through, but it was a tense minute while she tried to get off the harness and away.

Takenoko

This was a cute game, but the mechanics were too random for my liking.  The random goals and random abilities made planning more than half a turn out very difficult.  This is what is referred to as bad random; where the randomness determines what you do instead of determining the results of your actions.  I don’t think I’ll be playing it again.  The rules book was also very vague on many of the edge cases.

We played two games of it with Nick, Steph, Brian, and myself.  Nick won the first game and I won the second.
