Hunger Challenge

Steph and I participated in the Hunger Challenge, and it made me think a good bit about how I look at food.  Food broke down into 3 big categories when I was doing my analysis, Caloric, Enjoyment, and Nutritious.  The breakdown of costs wasn’t exactly as I had expected.  I expected the Caloric < Nutritious < Enjoyment.  What I found was that the Enjoyment < Nutritious foods in most cases.  If I wanted some chocolate, cheese, or hot sauce, it would cost about a dollar and I would get a decent amount of it.  If I wanted a head of broccoli, asparagus, bell peppers, spinach, etc.  I could buy some for around a dollar, but it wasn’t very substantial on its own.  Carrots were the exception to that, being both cheap and decently nutritious.  The meats I bought were pretty terrible, and I don’t think I’ll be doing that again soon.  I found that the vegetarian options weren’t that bad, and that they could be tasty if spiced right.  Rice and beans is delicious if you have a half dozen different ways to spice it, for when the mood hits.  I had cheese, hot sauce, peanuts, ginger and garlic, soy/fish sauce, and meats if I wanted to add something to it.  I bought way too much food, and am still eating some of it.

The bag ‘from’ the food bank did make a huge difference, since it added a lot of variety and healthy foods to the diet that wouldn’t normally be in the budget; mainly fruits.

Brunch, MTG, and Shabuway

Steph had a seminar this past weekend so I had some time for a guys day.  I biked over to Andrew’s place, and took a wrong turn onto Lawrence, making me about 30 minutes late.  I was still there before many of the others.  Brunch was fantastic, with some tasty pancakes from Lindsay, some eggs surrounded by sausage from Adam, and an assortment of other tasty treats from Andrew and Debby.  I brought some nice croissants, and made some of the cheese filled crescent rolls that Steph likes.

After brunch some of Andrew’s workmates joined for a draft, and it was nice to do a 6 person draft instead of the 4 person ones we normally do.  I lost some and won some.  I had a really fun deck, that only needed a few more act of treasons to round it out.  In the entire card pool there was only one copy, despite it being common, and I still got that one.  I had a red/black steal and sack deck.  There was one guy who somehow drafted a mill deck, and he ended up beating a lot of us pretty soundly.

After the MTG we went to Shabuway for dinner where Steph joined us.  I had so many enoki mushrooms and it was gloriously delicious.

Curry and a Show

Stephanie and I went to Andrew’s place for some curry.  Adam and George were also there.  It was really tasty.  We then watched an episode of Naked and Afraid, which was nice.

Andrew’s and Haru’s Birthday

We went to Alexander’s for dinner on Andrew and Haru’s birthday.  We had a delicious dinner, with some amazing hamachi shots beforehand.  I struggled with the diet Stephanie and I are starting, but the steak was delicious enough to keep me going.

Steph’s New Coworkers

Steph and I went shopping Saturday morning at REI, Petsmart, and OSH.  There was an interesting setup of paintings outside of REI, but none of them particularly struck a cord with me.

Steph’s coworkers had a barbecue that afternoon that we went to.  They were all pretty cool, and we’ll probably go hiking/backpacking with a few of them.  I really enjoyed the conversations.  There were four children there, all about the same ages (2-4), but they were mainly well behaved, or at least distracted.  The food was particularly good, especially the cherry cider.

Dinner with the Lees

On Friday Steph and I went to dinner with her parents, at Burma Ruby.  The food was great but the noise level in the place was way to loud.  Afterwards we went by the beam store and her parents were pretty impressed by the beams there.  I think they really liked seeing something that Steph had been working on up and around.  There was an actual product she could show off after a ton of work and headaches.  We also told them about us moving in together, and I think they took it well.  They were concerned about certain parts, but we have most of their concerns covered.

Chinese New Year Lunch

Stephanie and I went to lunch with her extended Bay Area family for Chinese New Year.  It was actually 2 days after, but close enough.  We went to a nice restaurant and got some really tasty food.  I invited Jeff and Patty to a Paint Nite and they were happy to join.

Dinner with Nick

I met Nick for dinner Friday last week, and we got some Thai food.  I had a nice curry, and he got something that seemed fermented and had a good bit of shrimp paste.  I liked the first taste, but the aftertaste didn’t appeal to me.  We went back to his work afterwards and hung out for a bit while I waited on the next train.  He was trying to set up an automated plug, but the network was too complicated.  I made a 5 sided lego structure, and it worked surprisingly well.

Dinner with the Lee’s

Steph and I went to dinner with her parents at a nice restaurant in San Carlos.  They got a decent groupon for dinner, and I assumed it was at a decent but not fancy place.  The place was actually rather fancy, and Steph just happened to wear a decent looking sweater, but I was looking somewhat ill suited for the place in a t-shirt.  Steph and I both got gnocchi and it was delicious.
