It's an Exciting World

The life and times of David Geisert

Climbing With Steph

Steph and I went climbing again last night, and we got a good number of climbs in.  We hit a 5.10d on one of the taller walls, and it was quite a challenge.  The holds had been made very smooth from the hands of many people before us and a ton of oily chalk.  There was one part in particular that Steph and I skipped, but I was able to come back to it later and get through it with some really precarious balancing.  Steph was getting worried about some stuff at work, so we went back home to let her work through it.

Saturday Sailing

Steph and I took a bike ride down to Shoreline Lake and went sailing for about 45 minutes.  It was a gorgeous day and the wind was perfect for full sail.  It was challenging with the smaller boats and having to move around in ways that I normally didn’t have to in the larger boats.  The ride itself was really nice as well.  There is a ton of construction going on between the Bayshore path and East Palo Alto, so we had to actually had to take the roads instead of the nice nature surrounded paths.  There is a helicopter that has been airlifting something over to the construction site both yesterday and today, which is cool to see.

Jason and Julian’s Parties

We went to one of Steph’s friend’s birthday parties, and it was nice.  He had some delicious sausages and mustards.  They were incredibly tasty.  I had a decent time there, but didn’t really know anyone and only managed to make it into conversations awkwardly.

After that we went to Julian’s party where people were playing the a cool party version of Jenga, that seemed to have a lot of cool house rules.  I only got one and it wasn’t very exciting.  Steph was incredibly tired so we went home early.

Bike Ride with Michael

Michael and I went to Shoreline Lake on a nice bike ride.  We then went to downtown Mountain View and met up with Nima.  We went to a beer garden and had some tasty french fries.  We all had some good conversations and waited for Steph and Caryn to be ready to meet us for dinner.  We went to Shezan and got some really tasty food.  Steph and I then left for other parties.

Chocolate Garage

Steph and I biked to the chocolate garage this evening.  The chocolates they had out weren’t that tasty, except the one I had already gotten.  The coffee toffee bar is indescribably good.  I also got some more Momotombo since I had just finished the last batch.

Brunch at Stacks

I met Bill at Stacks for breakfast.  He is doing a games start-up like I am, but has been working at it a good deal longer.   We both got coffee with the Apple-wood Bacon and Avocado Omelette.  All in all it was a really nice brunch, and I look forward to seeing Bill again.

Nutrition Made Clear

This book was good, but didn’t contain as much information and detail as Lifelong Health.  I’d say if you had to choose one to listen to, choose Lifelong Health.  I have the same problem with this book; that they didn’t support the claim of eating a whole foods diet.  This issue most likely arises since there aren’t any good studies on diet (self reporting errors and long term stable groups and whatnot).  I also like that both books stressed the importance of working out, something that I should do more often.  I get off a bit easy since I bike everywhere, but that still doesn’t excuse the lack of vigorous workouts and weightlifting.

Lifelong Health

This book was very informative on the goods and bads of health.  There was a lot of science based evidence and good advice.  The only issue I have is the lack of science based evidence for the whole foods diet that is continually recommended.  I’m not saying that the diet is bad, and I agree with the logic they use (in most cases, i don’t care about fooling mother nature), but they don’t support the claims with evidence in this case.  I do like the rest of the evidence that is provided, and the caveats they give to each study they mention.  I am pretty sure I’m going to give up drinking alcohol altogether for the foreseeable future, as well as cutting out most meat.

Climbing with Steph at Planet Granite

Steph and I went to Planet Granite and got some good climbing in.  The routes we chose were not as hard as the ones we had done before, and Steph had her butt way off the wall on the last one.  She ended up pulling her shoulder/neck doing the last climb so I helped her out a bit with the belay.  We did a 5.9, 510a, 5.10c, and 5.11a.  The 11a was hard, and clearly made for someone my height.  I’m impressed Steph was able to do it at all.
