I liked the book, and was surprised at the number of company’s in the book that I’d visited. I also liked that their measure of success was usually having a good life and not making tons of money.
I thought this was a very well done series, but the acceleration at the end was a bit disappointing. The series had a huge build up and the ending was so quick. I really liked the way they went from a normal world, to conspiracy, to aliens, to universe war. The final enemy serpentine army defeat was super disappointing in how it happened, but the way the main bad guy was defeated was great. I really loved his ending. The world that was built wasn’t well flushed out, but I really liked the parts that were.
Steph and I went to the Cal Ave farmers’ market, and had our customary Samosas. I’m glad she got into that with me. We were able to get the pumpkin bolani. I was also able to send off my mom’s birthday present with a little something for my dad in the box.
After the draft on Saturday, I went to join Steph, Chris, and Brian. They were playing a board game, where Aliens were attacking them at a base. They lost that, then Steph and I played Hyrule Warriors. It was pretty much what I expected, although not as fun as I thought it would be. I felt like the levels were on a lot more of story rails than Dynasty Warriors had been. They also did a lot more of the Zelda like tricks to attack specific enemies, which was ok, but not what I was hoping for.
Andrew, Adam, Kevin, and I had another Khans draft. I was going for a build based around the +1/+1 counters, but it didn’t pan out. There just weren’t many of the necessary cards in the card pool. That led to a lackluster deck that didn’t really deliver. I was able to get a few really good cards, but the other decks had much more to pull from.
This was an interesting book, set in a post apocalyptic future of underground isolated cities. I really liked the build up of information. There seems to be more from the same author so I’ll have to figure out the ordering and keep the story going. I don’t know if I’ll be doing it right now. The other stories in the series seem to be of different times, not story continuations. I’m more interested in the after than the before, so Dust will probably be the next I go for in this series.
I played two rounds of Caverna last week with Adam, Tina, and Erik in the first round, then just Adam and I in the second. The first round went decently well, with me losing by a single point to Erik. The second round didn’t go well, as Adam was able to get lots of people, and I wasn’t. The two player version doesn’t work nearly as well for the military strategy. In total scores Adam and I pretty much tied over the two games.
Steph and I joined Brian and Nick at Brian’s place for dinner. Brian was cooking carrots with cheese ravioli in a pesto sauce. The pesto and cheese was really good. Steph and Brian shared a bottle of wine, and I tried out the game Time Force. The game was interesting, but it was trying to do too many things for it to be particularly fun.
Steph had a fun birthday party that was great, with the theme of Cards Against Humanity. Everyone showed up as one of the white cards, and there were a few as ‘Bees?’. Steph was ‘an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours’ and Lindsay was ‘panda sex’. I was one of the stranger more graphic cards, but the costume was strange, bulky, and uncomfortable. I changed and had a ton of great food. I paid for it on Monday with a stomach ache and heartburn. We played Cards Against Humanity at the end of the party, and it was fun. Some of the sets were hilarious. I wasn’t feeling too well, so I just watched.
Before the party we were able to re-rack the cider, and some of them were turning out really well. We figured out that the one we had been touting wasn’t the experimental one, but that one was still in the closet, and full of cloves. It needed more of the other spice flavors, so we added some more into it.
