Jack’s Birthday and a Short Hike

Steph and I went to the birthday party of an old coworker from Zynga.  Jack lives in Hayward, so we drove over and took a board game called Gauntlet of Fools.  We played that a few times, which I think people enjoyed, then we headed out to go on a short hike very close to Stephanie’s parents house.  There was a lot more open space than I had first thought, with the hill we saw from the parking lot being just the tip of the iceberg.  We walked around for about an hour, and it was getting cold and late so we headed back.  The view from on top of the hill was very nice.

Paint Nite

Steph and I went down to Cupertino to a Paint Nite of a diving scene.  I did a side view, with most people and the original being a bottom up view.  Steph had a lot of really well done fish, I went a little overboard with things to include in the painting.  In my painting there is an otter, a turtle, a jellyfish, a trigger fish, a kelp forrest, and a diver looking at an octopus.  Stephs is much more elegant, with the turtle being prettier and all the little fish and corals around the outside being more detailed.  She also had a lot more contrast between the background and the silhouette, which I think is also nice.

First Book Club Meeting

We had our first book club meeting last night and I’d say it went rather well.  The meeting was very light, with a lot of off topic comments.  We got through the book list and added a number more.  The one that we decided on was “The Power of Habit,” a book I’d listened to before.  I had rather liked it the last time.  There were a good number of people that showed up including Liana, Ryan, Jeremy, Tina, Candice, David, Steph, Andrew, and Debby.  There were a few people that couldn’t make it who asked to be notified what the book was as well.  I hope we get a good discussion out of it.  I’m going to send out some topics to think about soon, since I’m almost done with the first re-listen.

Time’s Edge

This was a particularly good story, although there were many parts where I wanted to throttle the main character because she was being so stupid.  She was able to come and go at will, then watch to see what would happen, and go back to change the outcome.  At some points she stubbornly refuses to do this and tries to have everything go right on the first try.  I really can’t understand her logic of never leaving to try again or watching more to see what happens.

Toulu’s welcome dinner

Steph and I cooked a beet salad for the welcome dinner and it was tasty.  We were joined by Candice, David, Tina, Kevin, and Amit joined a little later.  It was a great dinner and a good conversation.  We played a game of Betrayal with Amit being the traitor as the Demon Lord.  I had a good chance of finishing it quickly, but that didn’t come through.  It was enjoyable for me, but the others didn’t seem to as much.

New Years Dinner

Steph and I spent New Years at Nick’s place in SF and we played a game of Betrayal at House on the Hill.  I got a pretty simple game, but it was difficult for me based on all the character sanities being really high.  Luckily for me since all of them had really low might they couldn’t complete their goals anyway.  My character went away which was fine since she had gotten beaten up pretty badly.  We then played a few rounds of Hanabi and didn’t do too well.

We then got a Lyft to the restaurant for dinner, and they put us in the back room.  We got a ton of food and the duck was delicious.  I really enjoyed the conversation and it was a lot of great food.

A Simple New Years

We decided to stay in on new years and had a few of Steph’s roommates join us.  Tina and Amit were around and they joined us in a game of Tokaido.  I had gotten Tokaido for Steph and she got second in the game we played.  Tina won by a good bit, and Amit got a close third to Steph.  I got a far last.  After that we sat down for a good game of Dungeon of the Endless and watched When Harry Met Sally.

Dinner and a Movie

Steph and I went to Shiok with Amanath, Rish, Tommy, Sara, and Max.  Max just did dinner, and the rest of us went to see the last Hobbit movie.  It was terrible.  The movie had so many boss fights that it was more or less one boss fight after the other, and each one was absurd in how it played out.  The eagles coming at the end, while actually part of the book, really made it seem that much more absurd.  The one guy I wanted to see fight, beorn, didn’t really get anything more than a quick scene.  We were amused by the mounts that showed up in the last battle; the elk, pig, and rams.  The rams were especially amusing since they came out of nowhere.

BTD’s Housewarming

We went to Brian’s place for his housewarming.  He is living in the house in front of Beachhead now.  We had a great time starting out with great food, and we had 9 people there total.  After eating we did the gift exchange and I got a cocktail creation book, Steph got a dragon door knocker, and Alex TD got the 3Doodler we brought.  He spent the next hour trying to figure out how to use it.  It is a lot harder to use at first than expected.
