It's an Exciting World

The life and times of David Geisert

Automobile

This game was interesting to be sure.  I made a huge mistake the first play of the game and was paying for it ever after that.  The game is very unforgiving and you think that you are way behind, and have no money most of the time since it is all tied up in assets.

I got last in the game with Nick taking first by a large margin.  Adam and Brian were very close and about double the profit that I had gotten.

The lunch is catered every day, and there are lots of healthy snacks available at any time.

I like the new office and am enjoying the change.  It is close enough for me to bike to in about 10 minutes.

A Full Sunday

Sunday morning bright and early I went to meet up with Nima and Caryn at Stanford to play some squash.  We both got there at 8:40, so we threw the frisbee around until the facilities opened at 9am.  After they opened we played 3 way squash until 10:30.

After squash I called my parents and talked to them for about 20 minutes.

Then Caryn, Nima, and I went to meet Steph and Nick at the California Avenue Farmer’s Market.  I got my regular Samosa and ended up having lunch there with the amazing Lamb Curry Wrap.  After that Nima and Caryn joined me at Shoreline Lake for a relaxing talk and sit.  We just sat by the bay most of the time and talked about life.  If they end up moving close I’ll have to take them out sailing on the lake.

After that I went to home and played some more Minecraft with Nick.  Then, I left to join Stephanie for some horseback riding.  Smoothy was being good and I got some 2 point and trotting in.  Stephanie was having a really hard time getting Calypso to do anything and Calypso even reared up on Steph once.

We went to hang out at beachhead, then joined them for dinner at Tofu House, where I got the number 1.  I’d like to go to Tofu House more often as it was delicious and not that fatty, just really salty.  After that we sat down and watched My Cousin Vinny, which is a really awkward but good movie.

Big Basin

Today Nick, Steph, and I went to Big Basin state park for a 10 mile hike along the Berry Creek Falls Trail.

image

The hike was gorgeous and I reallu enjoyed it. The trees are so massive and the burned out hollows ibt the middle of the trees is pretty impressive also.

image

There were a ton of banana slugs. Steph was super exited fir the first few but they were so frequent that she soon stopped pointing them out.

image

The falls themselves were very pretty and unique. There were three big sets of falls.

image

We had lunch at the first set of falls.

image

The second set of falls had a slippery path that wound down the top to the bottom. It was a little frightening but not too bad.

image

The Berry Creej Falls was the last large waterfall. It was just slightly the largest but I thought the first set was the prettiest.

image

At the end of the 10 mile loop were the biggest trees. The one above has a full sized tree coming off the trunk halfway up and it looks like a branch up against the main trunk.

Zahir’s Bistro

Raspberry drop was very good as they made most of the ingredients in house. I got the artichoke chicken for dinner and the appetizer conbos were all fantastic.

Rhetoric, Poetics and Logic

This was a very dense book and I would need to listen to it several times in order to get a decent understanding of what was being said.  A lot of it could be encompassed in venn diagrams when it came to the logic part.  The if A then B, and if A then C stuff would have been much better to understand in the Venn space.  I did like that part about the rhetoric and how things follow from each other.  This has somewhat to do with game theory, but is a far precursor of it.  Another statement that I like and is something that I tend to believe strongly is that wealth is not in the ownership of things but in the use of them.  I hope to remember that owning nice things is completely worthless except to have them be used.  And using nice things is the primary end of owning nice things, so if using the nice things can be accomplished without owning them you get about the same benefit overall.  This certainly applies strongly to some of the hobbies I’ve taken up recently, like sailing and horseback riding.  This also applies to having a car vs. using Zipcar or a similar sharing system for the car.  I’d gladly pay Steph so that I don’t have to own a car, but it is not a significant burden on her that she be the one to own a car out of the two of us.  The communal housing is another part of this idea that ownership is not wealth, but use is wealth.  With communal housing i get the use of many things my roommates have and they get the use of things that I have, thereby increasing the wealth of all of us.  I don’t think I’m going to be listening to something quite this dense for a good while, although once in a while listens to dense material is ok.

This is just as tasty as it was at the french restaurant in Monterey. I realoy enjoy this wine.

Beer School

This book wasn’t what I expected.  It was much more business focused.  For me that isn’t such a bad thing, as it gave me a lot to think about when/if I end up starting my own company.  I did enjoy the talks about partners, employees, nepotism, networking, and marketing.  I have the tendency to try to do everything myself, which is good in startup phase, but quickly dies off.  The beer festivals they got going sound like a lot of fun, and I’d love to go to more festivals around here.

Predictioneer’s Game

The application of game theory supported by this book and used in practice is something I like.  I would like to learn more about game theory and how to functionally apply it.  It seems to me that this is naturally synergistic with Decision Analysis.  Combining the two makes for a very powerful model of how people will make decisions and how I should make decisions.  Since I have extra time today I will probably look up some additional material on game theory.  Reading the Wikipedia article and the links from that is a good start, but I’d like it in the form of a lecture or class if that could be found.
