Crown of Swords: Wheel of Time 7

Many things happened in this book, with the final part being the unknown takedown of a forsaken.  Rand almost dying was strange, and the instance that brought it about stranger.  Some of the parts of this book seemed forced and contrived.  Especially now that almost everyone has the ability to travel instantly there are contrived situations to keep them from doing that to fix everything quickly.  The limit of information is probably the biggest limitation that is left at this point.  I’m wondering how the other books will keep this limitation and the story in line.

Lord of Chaos: Wheel of Time 6

I really liked this book as Perrin and Loial got back into the mix.  I really like Loial and Perrin.  Those two and Matt are my favorite characters in the series.  I very much enjoyed the black tower coming up in this book, and much of the action taking place.  It still seems to be setting up for bigger things, and I’m still not certain what those bigger things are.

Bootstrap Finance: the Art of Start-ups

This book didn’t have too many tips or how to’s about bootstrapping.  It mainly said that it is a good idea.  I admit that I shouldn’t expect much out of a 41 minute listen, but I still expected more than was delivered.

The Fires of Heaven: Wheel of Time 5

This book was nice, but completely ignored several of my favorite characters.  Nothing in the two rivers was mentioned in the least.  Perrin and Loial are my favorite two characters and the seem like the most regular guys in the story now.  The others have started going off the deep end in power and ability.  The setup continues for the later books, but there was some really nice action in this one.  I’m not sure all of what happened with the forsaken, but most of it seems to be going well for the good guys.

The Shadow Rising – Wheel of Time 4

This book was a little odd, it only sets up all the other stories coming up, but doesn’t wrap up any of them.  I am looking forward to the ends of these arcs, but it will be a good number of books before they are done.

The Dragon Reborn – Wheel of Time 3

This book brings together all the major arcs of the first 3 books in the series.  It was nice to have that kind of action come to a head.  Rand keeps getting these kill all moments.  I really like the story of Matt and his luck.  It was really interesting and fun to listen to.

The Great Hunt – Wheel of Time 2

This story is coming along nicely, but there are so many things going on at once, and they are all very interrelated.  It reminds me a bit of how Song of Ice and Fire, but the stories are more interconnected and thus a bit harder to follow.

The Eye of the World – Wheel of Time 1

I really liked this book.  It had many common themes with other fantasy novels like the LOTR series and Narnia.  It takes a bit of a different view of these and brings the characters more down to earth so to speak.  The character development in these books is done really well.  I also couldn’t see what was coming next, but there was enough foreshadowing to give a hint of it and keep me going.  The universe for the Wheel of Time is really well thought out and has a lot of interesting tidbits that fit well together.  There seems to be a good bit of forgotten lore, which is full of half truths.  The way the author makes these peice of lore talked about early in the story come to life when they actually come upon what was talked about later is phenomenal.  I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Augustus: The Life of Rome’s First Emperor

I always love listening to the history of ancient Rome.  It was a great book on the subject of Augustus, with some good details before and after his life.  I think that if I ever really want to know the history of Rome I’ll need to sit down with a mapped version of the events.  All the places and islands and people get really confusing for me.  I’ll need a visual basis for it to really sink in.
