The life and times of David Geisert

The Blade Itself

This was a pretty good book, and I like the magic history that is put into the book.  There was surprisingly little that happened in the book, with most of it being politics.  They mention a lot of things that are on the horizon and a lot of things that had happened, but not much goes on in the book itself.  I like the writing and world building though.  I’m going to have to finish up this series to get all the good action parts as well.

Theft of Swords

This was a very enjoyable book, and I like most of the characters in it.  There isn’t any super character, but they all have their super moments.  I like how the story wove together and I can see mostly where it is going.  I look forward to listening to more in this series.

A Beautiful Friendship

This was a quite good book, and it also talked about the moral questions I like.  I took a more pragmatic and economic bent to it with politics taking a front seat.  I think I’ll listen to the rest of the series.

A Princess of Mars

This was by far the worst book I’ve listened to on Audible.  The book is really bad, the science is idiotic, there is no development of any kind, and there is nothing interesting that happens.

Falling Free

This book was pretty good, and the logic that is covered is pretty interesting.  I like the different approaches to “what is humanity?” and “what is inherently valuable?”  These questions are covered nicely here, and I like the way the characters interact around them.  I especially like how the final moments play out with the bad guy being shut down by his own terribly logic.

New Spring

I loved this book.  This gives a great back story to several of the very important side characters in the Wheel of Time series.  The story is very well done and has a lot of great information, while at the same time is well enough encapsulated that it can be read without having read the series.  I like the way it shows all the characters that are grown up in the later books as younger and more inexperienced people in this book.

Outlander

This was a really nice book, with an interesting premise, but a little heavy on the love and womanliness.  The premise is that stone circles in Britain can transport people back about 200 years from their present time.  The main character is a woman that had this happen to her.  She doesn’t really take advantage of her knowledge much, and can’t adjust to the times well.  She continually is stubborn and puts the people around her in danger.  She especially does this with her new husband, eventually getting him raped and beaten nearly to death.  She meets one other person that had done the time travel, but she is burned as a witch.  I think the story is well done, but I didn’t care for the main character.

Warbreaker

This was a well developed universe, and the focus on color was interesting.  I liked most of the characters in this story, except that some of their endings are less exciting than what I was hoping for.  The story was very well put together, with the ending piecing all the different parts of the story into a nice ending.  The ending was a little too neat for all that, and it seemed like things were all too convenient, but it turned out well in the end.  I think this book is still on the weak side when it comes to Sanderson’s writings.

Steelheart

This was an interesting world, but I didn’t care for many of the details of how the powers worked.  It was all very contrived feeling.  I did like the story a good bit, and the action sequences were very nice.  I think this is one of Sanderson’s less well developed stories.
