Descent 2nd Edition

Adam, Tina, George, and Steph have teamed up as a band of heroes against me, the evil overlord.  So far we’ve been really close, with me losing by one goblin in the first quest.  I then lost by 1/32 health in the second  quest and 1/25 health in the third quest.  I’m having a really good time.  The hardest part is dealing with Tina getting a lucky drop on the very first quest and that leading to Steph having an insanely overpowered weapon for this early.  I’m going to have to focus fire her a lot more.

Castles and Moats

For games night we had a nice game of Castles of Mad King Ludwig with the moats expansion.  It was an interesting set of changes, that I didn’t really do much with.  I chose the route of ignore the expansion and go for all the bonuses I could.  It got me a close second, but Adam was able to use the new expansion to get a very solid first.  Tina also used the expansion fully, but didn’t get things to work out well together.  Ian was new to it, but he did relatively well.

Poker at Andrew’s

I went over to Andrew’s place on Friday night last week for some poker.  I got beaten pretty soundly.  The most frustrating losses were Debby notching me twice.  It was an interesting setup, and I was ready to head out pretty early since I had been working extra time all week.  The kitties came to hang out for most of the game, which was unexpected and nice.

Ma Po Dinner

We had Kevin, Lindsay, Andrew, and Debby over for a dinner of Ma Po Tofu.  It was delicious, but the beef version had a little too much beef.  I think I’d like to make it more, and try it with more and different kinds of veggies.  We’ve been doing it with minced mushrooms which works really well, but I think it could be even better.  After eating we played a game of Legendary, the Marvel deck building game.  Steph won by a lot, but it was close to all of us losing.

Bios Megafauna

I played a game I hadn’t before at games night with Brian, Tina, and Adam.  Bios was an interesting game, with many different facets.  The parts we were in control of were really fun, but the random events could completely decimate a player.  There were points when a winning player would be taken completely off the board by an event.  This made it very frustrating to play.  The building up of the species was a lot of fun, and it worked really really well.

Games Night – Codewords

I really enjoyed getting back to games night this past Thursday.  We didn’t play any really intense games.  Just one round of Roll for the Galaxy, and three games of something new: Codewords.  We had a great time playing this new game that has a ton of possible optimizations, and meanings.  We were able to get a few really good rounds that had people giving 5 and 4 clues.  I’m pretty sure we’re going to get it for more social things around the apartment and at Andrew’s.

MTG and the Poke Bowl

Steph and I had brunch at Andrew’s place, then we started drafting.  Steph came along, and once Debby got there they started their MTG matches.  My games went decently well, but I wasn’t able to cope with the removal that Kevin and Andrew had.   Adam also beat me, but those games were much closer.  I could have beaten him, but I misplayed right at the end.  I still had a really good time.

After MTG Adam and I went to a castle in the hills that was for sale.  It was really adorable, but not very finished.  I liked the property, but it was also really hard to get to.  They also had a broken down trebuchet.

We then went to dinner at a tapas restaurant, and followed that up by the movie “The Lunchbox” which was a very strange movie.

Mage Knight

Adam, Tina, Andrew, and I played a game of Mage Knight on Saturday 9/26.  It was a great game, and I had a very interesting build.  I had taken a lot of learning cards early one, and so my deck was getting massive with extra advanced actions.  The issue was that we were doing single large assaults and I couldn’t go through my deck fast enough to make it useful.  I ended up just making life harder for myself.  Tina did the units strategy, which worked great for the single huge assault.  I think I understand more about the game now because of that.

We played the newest expansion and it was pretty bland.  The differences between the factions weren’t pronounced enough, and the final bosses were just strange.

Roll for the Galaxy

Steph, Erik, and I played Roll for the Galaxy.  It was a really enjoyable game.  We ended up getting a good 4 games in, since it was so quick.  I won one game, and Steph won another.  Erik’s friend won the others, with Erik getting last in pretty much every one.
