This was a nice book, that had an exciting story. I really like the messiness of all the characters, where they actually feel real. They have their goals, and their moral failings. The character of Logan Nine Fingers is the most interesting since he has the split personality that has supernatural powers. It is an example of an extreme Jekyll and Hyde.
I enjoyed this book, with the main character being punished for her attempts to help people, and it compounding upon itself. The pilot dichotomy is strange, since there is a hard cutoff. I would expect there to be a bell curve of physical aptitude, but the book make it sound like there are those who have it and those who don’t. I might read more of the series, but it is decently low on the list.
We met with Michael at Nolas for dinner. Peter showed up, but the rest didn’t come for a long while. We decided to head on in and get some dinner, and the food was decent. Eventually Daisy, then Nima and Caryn showed up to hang out. I’ll miss Michael, but we can still have good conversations via email and chat.
Stephanie and I decided to do a hike with a meetup group. We went to Castle Rock State Park to do the hike and the group turned out to be a rather large one. There were a little over 50 people there and most of them were either significantly older than us, or transient foreigners. They were all great people, and most were decent hikers, but we didn’t feel like there was the kind of people that we could be friends with. We got a lot of good suggestions of other meetup groups to try. I also think a hike with 50 people was way too many, and the waiting for the slow people to catch up got annoying towards the end.
The hike was a total of about 8 miles, and had some amazing views.
We had a good 6 player game of Wealth of Nations with Nick, Adam, Chris, Tina, and Jeff. Nick ended up winning with Jeff in a close second. I made a huge mistake where I wasn’t able to produce for a turn. Tina had the worst start, since she was in two economies that were dominated by others. I enjoyed it but would appreciate it being a bit faster.
I’ve been walking the kitties, and it has been very nice. Archer Kitty got scared from the Google Delivery guy. He hurt himself trying to get inside. I felt really bad for him, he was so scared. His rear claws got so worn down from trying to run away that they ended up bleeding. I’ve put on some antiseptic and covered his paws, and he didn’t like that. He’ll be better for it.
I liked the movie, even though there were some outlandish things they did. The new powers that Kitty had were one. I did like all the epic battle scenes in the future. I also liked how they did a full reset of the series like was done with Star Trek. It will be nice to have some of the old characters back, and without a lot of the baggage that they had started with. I was also excited to see the ending credits scene. It will be interesting to see if that actually makes it to the next movie.
We went to Kublacon on Monday mainly to meet with James. We had a good conversation about what we should expect, and what we needed to do. He has a lot of good insight on the kickstarter campaigns and games in general. I was glad that he seemed very open the idea of doing more of the digitizations of his games if this one goes well. We went to lunch at the broadway grill in burlingame. It was pretty tasty, especially the carrot ginger soup.
This was a good story, but I really didn’t like the delivery. The way the perspective jumped around threw me off in a lot of situations, because I couldn’t easily tell that the change had happened. I did like a lot of the world building and most of the characters, but that disorienting perspective makes me not as keen to continue on this series at the moment.
