I met Nick for dinner Friday last week, and we got some Thai food. I had a nice curry, and he got something that seemed fermented and had a good bit of shrimp paste. I liked the first taste, but the aftertaste didn’t appeal to me. We went back to his work afterwards and hung out for a bit while I waited on the next train. He was trying to set up an automated plug, but the network was too complicated. I made a 5 sided lego structure, and it worked surprisingly well.
Steph got sick this past weekend. She went ahead to the martial arts seminar on Saturday, while I stayed in and didn’t do much of anything, but cuddle with kitties. On Sunday, Steph stayed in while I went over to Adam’s place for some MTG. Andrew and Keven joined, as well as Debby being there just hanging out. We did two drafts, and I lost spectacularly at both. I tried some specific strategies, but they really didn’t turn out. I did misplay a few times, but it was more of choosing from two unknowns and getting the worse outcome. The draft was still very fun.
After drafting we went to a restaurant that Debby had recommended, JX Cuisine. Lindsay joined us, and we had some amazing food. I really liked the ma po tofu, and would definitely go back.
We had a pretty good turnout at the first full bookclub meeting, and the response to the book was mainly negative, but it made us think. There were some really good and impassioned discussions around the different concepts discussed. The most contested was the institutional habits and whether that level of control that the company is exerting on the individual is moral or not. Steph’s baked goods were delicious.
We decided on A Fire upon the Deep as the next book, and I’m going to read it a few times since it was pretty good.
Steph hosted a big brunch at Beachhead, that was supposed to be about 8 people and ended up being 16 with +1’s and other reasons to invite people. She made a ton or sourdough starter and we made that into waffles and pancakes. The food was delicious and the conversations were really good. We decided to play some MTG while Steph and Jeremy painted. Tina and I tried to play New Era before that but nobody else was particularly interested. We hung out long enough to order pizza for dinner and then watched a comedy show. Steph and I went back to my place for the evening and did the p90x, and I had a hard time keeping the pizza down.
Steph and I joined Tina, Amit, Jeff, and Patty at Rooster T. Feathers on Friday for a set of four comics. The first guy was trying out a lot of material for the first time, but a good bit was funny. The woman that came second was pretty funny, but it was because she was somewhere between a train wreck and awkwardly cute. She was also describing things that we couldn’t really relate with, but it was still decent. The third guy was really funny and had a really well planned performance. He was probably my favorite. The headliner was playing off the crowd really well, but there were lots of awkward and down moments. The night was a lot of fun and the spiked hot chocolate I got was delicious.
There was a small and quiet games night of just Chris, Jeff, and myself. We started out with Fall in a Pit and Die (Dungeon Quest). I did really badly on that one, not even making to the dragon before getting destroyed. Jeff ended up winning, since Chris wasn’t able to make it out in time. We then played a fun round of Galaxy Trucker, where we bid on the number of handicaps that we tried to make it trough the universe with. We did really well despite the obscene number of handicaps, and ended positive. I survived 9, and Chris survived 8. We will probably play that again but with us both doing the same handicaps.
Steph and I joined Andrew, Kevin, and Lindsay at a Pho place on Friday night. The food there was pretty good, and the conversation was interesting, but it was all leading up to the karaoke. We went to a place nearby and got a room. The interface on the karaoke machine was amazingly terrible, like being able to hand write letters for the song you are looking up. We got a book and mainly were inputting numbers. I put in some Beatles songs since they are fun, short, and most everyone knows them. I had a sore throat that day so it was a little tough to sing. Lindsay and Debby were singing amazingly well. Steph was doing pretty good, and then there were the guys. Andrew was ok, Kevin was a little worse, and I was pretty bad due to the sore throat. I had a great time.
We played another game of Dungeon Quest yesterday, and I got insanely lucky again. I was able to make it into the catacombs, and get the gigantic diamond there, then make it to the dragon’s room. I took some treasure and left through the other side. Everyone else died. It was a very interesting game, and I enjoyed it. The luck I was getting was a bit absurd.
I then got on beyond earth with Steph and we played for about 3 hours, with it not going all that great.
The kitties are doing really well, and have been enjoying their Christmas presents. They have played with the spinning toy the Lee’s got them, Lana has actually been sitting in the crate that Steph got, and Archer has been enjoying the new fleece sheets that Steph bought. He looks like Jabba kitty in the picture below.
