Mariokart and Goldeneye

Today I got to play some Mariokart and Goldeneye against Jamie.  She talks a lot of smack and backs it up… mostly.  I have to say that I’m good at Mariokart, but she is better.   I did know some of the secrets that she didn’t, but that can only go so far.  In Goldeneye I am still the master.  We played 3 matches and each time it ended 5-1 with my victory.  She was very good, and knew many of the methods, but I am the Goldeneye champ.

Yet More Civ5

Last night Steph and I completed out game of diplomatic victory.  She is incredibly competitive about the game.  I had 125 hours of Civ 4 and now have 44 hours of Civ 5 played, so she shouldn’t be too surprised.

Oren’s Hummus

Last night after work I went to join Steph, Jeremy W, and Amarnath.  I showed up a bit late and Steph got me the classic hummus, which was delicious.

Leviticus and Numbers from NKJV

This was an incredibly boring and tedious listen, and I didn’t pay good attention through most of it.  I expect no other part of the bible to be quite as bad as these two books.  The laws are very specific and some of them are downright strange, but I can see how they came about with the technology of the time.  They wouldn’t have said that if the house is filled with mildew that you should bleach it and keep it dry.

Game of Thrones S3E8

This was a great episode!  So much actually happened, and finally Sam is the Slayer.  I’m looking forward to next season, but it is going to be such a long time.  I’m wondering if the wedding is going to be the end of the season the same way Ed Stark’s beheading was the end of the first.

Thinking, Fast and Slow

I like the way they broke down the automatic responses from the thought out responses.  This ties in really well with The Power of Habit and the concept of Mindfulness in Buddhism.  The habit is the automatic response while mindfulness is full consciousness.  They go into a lot of detail and focus really on the same concepts as Decision Analysis.  I really enjoyed the book, and might go back for a second listen.  I wasn’t particularly surprised by anything in it since I’d read similar books and take the classes on Decision Analysis.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

There were some strange plot holes in this movie, but all in all I really enjoyed it.  The 3D was somewhat sickening, and the volume was way too loud.  Steph, Brian, Candice, Nick, Adam, Rong, Riley, Andrew, Wit, and I went to see it together at the AMC Mercado 20.  I look forward to watching it again, but without the 3D or overpowering sound.  It was a very entertaining movie.

Basic Bareboat Chartering

The first day we were on Evasion, which was a Beneto boat.  I didn’t like it, as it felt quick and nimble but was really hard to steer or deal with in any way.  We did a lot of parking practice in the morning, then went out on the water in the afternoon to do some man overboard, jibing, reefing, and heaving to practice.  It was a gorgeous day the whole day.  Steph and I had a nice lunch on the boat.

The second day we got there to find out that a Half Maraton had made it so we could not get to the harbor by driving.  We parked next to the market where we had grabbed lunch before and then walked down to the ship.  We were on Wind Goddess, a really nice Catalina 32.  We started out with some parking practice and while pulling into the fuel dock I got complimented by the Coast Guard on my parking.  The parking job was really smooth, I stopped perfectly where I wanted to and perfectly parallel to the dock.  We filled up on water and emptied the head then did some more parking practice.  After a nice lunch on the ship, where I also grabbed some of Steve’s pizza, we did our parking test.  We all did rather well, except that the bow of my 90˚ parking job went wayyyy out.  I think a good bit of that was Alex focusing on the dock line instead of the ship, but I should have been able to get him to bring it in.  We went out on the Ocean for the rest of the exam and there was a big souther swell and really strong wind that made it quite hard to work.  We ended up taking in 2 reefs while out there and the whole test went really well.  I got a 97/96 and Steph got a 95/95.  passing was a 90 so we both passed by a lot and did really well.  Steve complimented me on learning so quickly and doing really well, which was really nice to hear.  I hope we can go sailing with him again.  Perhaps we can charter his boat so that we can learn a more complicated sail structure; his boat has 4 sails.

Anyone want to live with me in Mountain View? One of my roommates just moved out to live with his girlfriend.
