Friday At PAX

Friday was overwhelming at PAX.  I’m not a big fan of crowds, and PAX seems to be nothing but crowds.  I was able to handle it for a while, and did enjoy the indie mega booth.  There are a good number of games that look very interesting.  It is amazing to see the influence Clash of Clans and MineCraft have had on the games that indie developers are making.  There weren’t too many original projects, but a lot of them did build well on top of well defined mechanics.  The originality was certainly there.

I really liked the Pixel Junk Inc. game that Steph tried out, as well as Cannon Brawl.

I competed in the Goldeneye tournament and had a disappointing first round knockout.  I’m sure I could have made it to the final 4 match, but the disparity in skill level made it more of a hunt than a match.  The settings were also quite strange as the organizer had never played the game before.

Nick, Steph, and I played two pretty good board games.  The first was a dice drafting, resource management game called Castle Dice.  It was quite good, but not good enough to buy.  We didn’t finish the game either, as the guy at the booth was just showing us how to play and implied that he didn’t want us to stick around and play it.

The second game was a very fast paced interactive dice roller.  It was the next in the series of Space Cadets, called Space Cadets: Dice Duel.  In this version of the game you are going up against another team, and you have to load missiles, get lock, and move to be able to shoot them.  Then you must also dampen their lock, build up shields, and make sure they can’t shoot you.  Steph, Erin, and myself won handedly both times over Nick and the two other guys there.  We destroyed their ship without getting hit both times if I remember correctly.

Steph and I went to a really nice wine bar after that.  We had several flights of wine (Sweet, Alsace, and Port) as well as some phenomenal desserts.  We were joined later by Andrew and Nick.  We were almost done at the wine bar, but we stuck around for a bit longer and had another desert with Nick.

Glass Gardens in the Morning

This morning Steph and I walked to the Chihuly Glass and Garden under the Space Needle.

The gardens were really pretty.  The favorite exhibit for me was the interior garden that we could walk all the way around.  He has a dozen or so basic forms that he then combines in all sorts of combinations and colors.  The walk was also very nice as we stopped by a suisse cafe for breakfast and a little glassworking shop on the way back.  Seeing all the glass I really wanted to get back to the glassworking, if it wasn’t so expensive.  Should I be able to rent time I would totally go more often.  We got back and picked up Steph’s Saturday pass from Andrew and went to the convention.

Flight to PAX

Last night I had Steph drop me off at SJC so that I would be there, and she wouldn’t have to drop me off at 4am.  I didn’t get much sleep in the airport, but I did sleep decently well on the flights.

I just got to the room and hooked my mac mini up to the TV.  It works surprisingly well as a monitor.

Jeremy’s Hang out and Play Games Party

This was quite a nice event.  We played two different games while there.  Dragon’s Crown and Mario for the Wii U.  They were both incredibly chaotic games, and we didn’t do terribly well in either.  Luckily they are designed for people who can’t play games that well.  One is the hack and slash, and the other is a very forgiving platformer.

Jeremy made his famous dip, and also the elusive pizza dip.  They were both quite delicious, and I ate way to much of both of them.  He also had a nice selection of beer, and I got some more caps for my collection.

Coffee with Michael

Yesterday I grabbed some quick coffee with Michael, who I hadn’t seen in about a year and a half.  It was good to talk to him about his startup ideas and how he is going about the whole process.  We went back to my place for a bit and I helped him set up a wordpress blog and set up the url to it as well.  We had coffee at Cafe Venetia on University.

Kitties on Leashes

I took the kitties out on a leash yesterday.  They both did rather well.

Lana was able to go outside for a bit, but got spooked at one point and ran back inside.  She is certainly the more reluctant one, which is actually why I am ok with taking her farther.  Her default reaction is to run back inside.

Archer was doing well but didn’t fully adjust to the leash being on him.  He would try to play with it, or would struggle against it.

They have also both taken to sitting in my lap while I am working.  I really like it when they are calm and in my lap, but not so much when they are active and in my lap.

The Lorax

I rather liked this presentation of The Lorax.  I really enjoyed the early interactions of the Once-ler and the Lorax’s forrest.  It was adorable and funny.  The rest of the movie was a little predictable, and didn’t have as many double entendres that I normally expect from animated children’s films.  The end was also a little too happy for the way the book ends.

Fixing the Wall

Friday afternoon I took a long bike ride to go fix the wall when I removed the mirrors.  I found out that paint matching is a tough process, since you can’t bring the wall to the store very easily, and bringing samples to the wall doesn’t work very well.  There are just too many samples to bring them all reasonably.  I got lucky in that I was fixing a wall that I had ripped a few pieces out of, so I just took the wall pieces for matching.  It was hard to find a really good match even with the wall piece there, but I got one that was really close.  I went back and painted over the spots that I had already spackled over.  Then I biked back to my place.  The whole trip to nearly 3 hours and I had biked at least 25 miles on the trip at a good pace.  I think I am finished with the things I need to do at 906, unless I want to go back for the Olives next week.  It seems like it would be nice, but it would be a good chunk of time that I just don’t have right now.
