Game of Thrones with Riley

We went to Riley’s place after dinner to watch Game of Thrones.  It was a pretty good episode, and I like the changes they’ve been making.  It simplifies things a lot, while not losing the characters or the story.  I think this can be done since the screen gets across a lot of information that the books might not be able to succinctly.

Agricola and Cijjo

I played a round and a half of Agricola with Adam, Andrew, and Tina.  It was fun, and I was doing well the second game.  I had to leave early so that Steph and I could get to Dinner with Jeremy and Andrew at Cijjo.  The food was decent, but not great, and the service was horrifically slow.

Sailing

We took Andrew, Lee, Esther, and Kevin.  Steph was the captain most of the time, and she did very well.  There were a few parts where she was a little forgetful about some important terminology and how to do some of the more complex maneuvers, but all in all it was a good trip.  We had lunch out at sea, and Andrew and Kevin got sick from it.  I found that heaving to and sitting there a while is when people tend to get sick.  I think we should eat before heading out from now on, and less focus of cheese in the meals.  After sailing we went to The Penny and got some amazing ice cream.  The strawberry was delicious and the white chocolate wasn’t bad either.

Garden Fresh with Jeremy

We met with Jeremy and his gf at Garden Fresh for some tasty food.  The dinner took a lot longer than expected from slow service, but it was pretty tasty.  We then went to check the line at Cream, which was far too long.  We decided scoop would be a better choice and got some tasty liquid nitrogen ice cream there.  Riley and Jimmy were out on a man date and decided to say hi.  We invited them back to beachhead where we watched lots of random youtube videos.

Suburbia and Race for the Galaxy

I explained and played some games with people, and I think it went decently well.  I tried to help with strategy in suburbia but I still won by a ton.  I didn’t describe strategy as much in Race for the Galaxy, since it is a much more complicated game.  I did describe the strategy I was going to take, which is one I haven’t really done before.  It was a good time and I got to play with Cynthia and one of her friends.

New Spring

I loved this book.  This gives a great back story to several of the very important side characters in the Wheel of Time series.  The story is very well done and has a lot of great information, while at the same time is well enough encapsulated that it can be read without having read the series.  I like the way it shows all the characters that are grown up in the later books as younger and more inexperienced people in this book.

Outlander

This was a really nice book, with an interesting premise, but a little heavy on the love and womanliness.  The premise is that stone circles in Britain can transport people back about 200 years from their present time.  The main character is a woman that had this happen to her.  She doesn’t really take advantage of her knowledge much, and can’t adjust to the times well.  She continually is stubborn and puts the people around her in danger.  She especially does this with her new husband, eventually getting him raped and beaten nearly to death.  She meets one other person that had done the time travel, but she is burned as a witch.  I think the story is well done, but I didn’t care for the main character.

Paint Night

We had a lot of fun painting, and it was a good random thing to do where no one has to worry about the outcome.

Andrew, Nick, and David all chose pictures to base their paintings on, with the rest of us just winging it.  I was happy with the two I made, one being the waterfall, the other being the silhouette kitties.  I really like the silhouette style art.

Songkran Festival

Sunday we went to the Songkran festival in San Jose, and met there Jeremy, Nick, Wit, and Riley.  The food was pretty good, and the Thai ice tea from the temple was delicious.  There wasn’t much else to do there, so we ended up sitting in the beer garden for a bit, while not liking the music.  The speakers were bad and the singing voices weren’t particularly good either.  We then went back to beachhead and played primordial soup.  It was a decent game, but there was a lot of uncertainty about what to do exactly.
